A Drawing Experience with Four FRANK Gallery Artists

EACH SESSION IS $30 ($20 FOR PARTICIPANTS UNDER 15 YEARS OF AGE)*

MATERIALS WILL BE PROVIDED

All of the following classes are outdoor, plein air drawing classes.

In case of inclement weather, classes will meet at FRANK Gallery.

These outdoor sessions will investigate some tools for drawing in the landscape: Small quick sketches, or gesture drawing; Using a grid for  framing and scaling drawings; Exploring the gray scale; A longer look for a more developed drawing. Materials provided.

Collage workshopwe will create small collages in our travel journals inspired by any piece of artwork on display in the gallery. I will provide a diverse array of my own hand-painted textures and patterns on paper to work with. The class is concurrent with a Dec-Jan exhibit of my large-scale abstract paintings at Frank Gallery. Student only need to bring their sketch book journals.

In this workshop, facilitated by fine-art photographer and award-winning teacher Peter Filene, you will learn how to”

  • See downtown Chapel Hill through fresh eyes

  • Combine photographs with words and sketches

  • Create a visual story

Session One (3/18): We walk around downtown for 30-45 minutes and shoot photographs that may turn out to tell a story or have a theme. In the second hour, you reflect on your photos with writing, sketches and discussion.

Between sessions: You compile photos. In your travel journals, you write descriptions, emotional reactions, and/or connections. 

Peter will teach two sessions, a week apart. Attendance at both is preferable but not required.

Session Two (3/25): You bring a dozen or so prints (hard copies) of your photos. Also bring pens, colored markers, glue, scissors and (if you wish) maps and poems. You assemble these materials into a story or narrative. If you are unable to attend session one, please bring along some photographs that you would like to use for this workshop. 

All participants under the age of 15 must be accompanied by an adult to all sessions. Adult participation is not required but must remain present for child to participate in session.

**One set of supplies (journal, pencils, erasers, etc.) will be provided for new registrants on your first workshop day. If you have signed up for our Travel Journals in the past, please continue bring your supplies to all upcoming sessions. Directions, alternate weather sites, and any other necessary information will be sent via email to the participants for that class. Dress accordingly, some sites will be outdoors (as noted) and require a short walk to reach the drawing destination.

Session descriptions are provided above. You are welcome to, but not required to participate in all sessions. Techniques will be reviewed as needed in each session, and will be expanded upon for repeat participants.
